Summer here is humid enough that a correctly sized air conditioner is doing as much dehumidifying as cooling. Winter, once the furnace has been running for weeks, is dry enough to crack wood furniture, split instruments and make everyone's sinuses miserable. Most homes in this corridor would benefit from help at both ends.
What actually helps
Whole-home dehumidification. For summers where the AC alone is not keeping moisture down — usually because the system is oversized and short-cycling.
Whole-home humidifiers. Winter comfort at a lower thermostat setting, because humid air feels warmer than dry air at the same temperature.
Better filtration. A deep media filter captures far more than a one-inch throwaway and does it without choking airflow the way a too-restrictive filter does.
Duct sealing. Leaky returns in a basement or crawlspace pull in exactly the air you would not choose to breathe. Sealing them is often the highest-value air quality fix in the house.
Ventilation. Tighter modern homes sometimes need deliberate fresh air rather than relying on leaks.
A caution about filters
A filter rated far higher than your system was designed for restricts airflow, which makes the blower work harder, reduces capacity and can freeze a coil. Higher is not automatically better. We will tell you what your specific system can take.
Older Cincinnati homes
Basement air, crawlspace air and duct leakage are the usual culprits in older housing stock here. It is worth addressing that before buying an air purifier to clean air you are actively drawing in from a damp basement.

The fastest way to spend your money badly is to replace components until the symptom goes away. We measure first.
We take readings. Pressures, temperature split, electrical values — not a guess based on what usually fails.
You see what we found. If a part is out of spec we will show you the number, not just the invoice line.
You get the arithmetic. Repair cost against replacement cost against remaining life. Then you decide.
No scare selling. If your system has years left in it we will say so, even when a replacement would be the bigger ticket.
It can help, but only up to what your system can handle. A filter rated too high for the equipment restricts airflow and causes its own problems. Often the bigger win is sealing leaky return ducts so the system stops pulling in basement or crawlspace air in the first place.
Do I need a humidifier in winter?
Many homes here benefit from one. Ohio winters get dry enough to damage wood and irritate sinuses, and humid air feels warmer, which means you can be comfortable at a slightly lower thermostat setting.
Is a UV light worth installing?
It has a role, particularly at the coil where biological growth causes smells and reduces efficiency. It is not a substitute for filtration or for fixing a duct problem, and we will not sell it to you as one.
